Naked Ape
This band went through two distinct incarnations, with the constants being Doc, Johnny Prong DeBorde, Corn Man Pig and Darcy Ward. With Paul Bernstein on bass, the Apes played a funky/garagey mix of originals and covers. When Denise Woodwad joined the direction turned toward more danceable fare.

"Percussionist Darcy Ward started things off for Naked Ape by jumping onto the stage wearing only white leggings and spider-print underwear. But what held the audience's attention was a unique salsa and rock combination.

"Each member took the mic, trading off throughout the set. Bassist Denise Woodward incorporated ape noises into her songs, and her spontaneity seemed to inspire the other players, especially guitarist Johnny Prong, whose Hendrix-inspired work, along with the steady drumming of Dave Ward, provided an underlying rock base for the band's unusual sound. Keyboardist Doc provided narrative lyrics while Ward manipulated congas, bongos, woodblocks and tom-toms.

"Naked Ape posseses the kind of unforced intensity that indicates that they will eventually have a very good band."
